Course Description: Why does the Bloomsbury Group still attract attention over a century on from its heyday? This course will introduce you to the circle of artists, writers and thinkers who came together as a group of friends in Cambridge at the start of the twentieth century and went on to influence developments in literature, art, philosophy and cultural life in Great Britain and beyond. You will discover some familiar figures such as Virginia Woolf, E.M. Forster and Roger Fry alongside some lesser-known names such as Saxon Sydney-Turner and Clive Bell. Illustrated lectures will cover Bloomsbury art, literature, politics and philosophy and we will read some extracts from written works by key members of the group, as well as having ample opportunity for questions and discussion.
